General Experience All positions except Reporting Stenographer, Shorthand Reporter, and Closed Micro-phone Reporter --Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.
Experience as a reporting stenographer, hearing reporter, or in other positions in which the primary duty was to make and transcribe manual or machine-written shorthand records of hearings, interviews, or similar proceedings.
Courses of this type steno writing a-z require completion of up to 40 hours per week of instruction rather than the usual 20 hours per week, and are usually of at least 3 months duration. Proficiency requirements are described below. For example, a position classified as Secretary StenographyGS, may require either 80 or words per minute dictation speed depending upon the level of difficulty of the stenographic duties.
The maximum number of errors allowed in a dictation sample for these three positions equals 5 percent of the required dictation speed multiplied by the number of minutes in the sample.
